MonaVie Pulse

Our hearts are miraculous little factories, pumping out blood to every part of our body. There are literally millions of little capillaries and blood veins all traveling to and from our heart, carrying oxygen rich blood to every area or taking depleted blood to be cleansed and re-circulated. And what thanks does our heart get from us? Do we ever take the time to thank it for a job well done? Do we give it the applause that it should get? No, we never pay any attention to our hearts at all, at least not until there is “an issue”.

For many people the first notice they give to their heart is when they have been given a bad report by their doctor. They learn that they have high blood pressure, or high cholesterol and that they are at risk for a heart attack or stroke. They wonder how this happened to them. And then they leave the doctor’s office, get into their cars, hit the drive-thru at the first fast food place they pass and wolf down a day’s worth of calories without taking their hand off the wheel. By the time they get home, they are lethargic, bloated and not feeling well at all. They grab the paper and nap in the chair. Then the spouse announces that it is time for dinner. Do they say no, they just ate? No, these people, who were just informed by their doctor of their impending doom, will go to the table, still bloated from their earlier “meal” and eat like they were starving. Starchy potatoes and fiber devoid white bread? Oh yes, give them more. Greasy fried meats served at double or triple the recommended portion sizes? Not a problem for them. Vegetables? Oh, no, no room on the plate for those. How long can a person eat like this and expect to remain healthy?

So, picture this happening another six months or so. The guy returns to his doctor, is told that his blood pressure and cholesterol are even more out of control and he is given a prescription of meds to take. Does he take the warning seriously now? No he does not. The only change he makes in his lifestyle is a minor swing to the drive-thru pharmacy for his new medications but then it is off to the burger joint, the nap in the chair and the overloaded and largely unhealthy supper. But, one day, his heart will have had enough. It contracts, just a little at first, and then a little more forcefully. The man clutches his chest and looks at his panicked spouse, pleading with her to help him. Sweaty, panting and racked with pain, he collapses to the ground in a heap. Doctors are able to save him, but just barely. This time he is told either change his ways or die. The man finally listens and starts to make some positive changes to help out his now severely and permanently damaged heart.
